Smells Like Teen Spirit

Standout players across the state are having memorable seasons and reaching statistical nirvana

Each season brings its share of individual achievements and memorable performances, and this year is no exception. Recently, several standout players have passed notable benchmarks in various offensive categories. Still others are fast approaching statistical milestones as the season moves into its final month of play.

Close followers of the girls game in Minnesota have periodically been alerted

to the many milestones attained by Luverne senior forward Kamryn Van Batavia. In her six-year varsity career, the MSU-Mankato signee has produced points like a lumberjack stacks cordwood.

Her most recent summit was scoring her 400th high school point. This moved KVB past Jessie Aney’s 399 career points scored for Rochester Century from 2010-2014.

That leaves only two players ahead of Kamryn in all-time girls high school history: Nicole Schammel of Red Wing, who notched 457 points for the Wingers from 2009-2014; and the GOAT, Natalie Darwitz, who stockpiled 468 points playing for Eagan from 1997-2000.

With just eight games remaining, plus playoffs, it would seem too tall an order for Van Batavia to reach either of those lofty peaks. Regardless, the Cardinal great will go down in history as one of just three players to have recorded over 400 career points, statistical altitude that seems less and less likely to be reached by players in the future.

Other outstanding players who arrived at some nice round numbers recently include:

Apple Valley sophomore Makayla Moran

Apple Valley’s Makayla Moran, who just netted her 100th varsity goal for the Eagles, is likely to reach 200 career points before the end of her sophomore year.

Gentry Academy senior sniper Cara Sajevic recently recorded the 150th point of her career. Sajevic, who is headed to St. Thomas next year, is a good bet to get to 100 career goals before this season ends.

Hill-Murray’s Chloe Boreen got her 100th point earlier this season and now has 75 goals as a Pioneer. She celebrated her accomplishments recently by delivering back-to-back game-winners in one-goal victories over Simley (OT) and Andover.

On the verge

Up in Hockeytown USA, the Warroad Warriors are cruising along as the heavy favorites to repeat as Class A state champs, currently playing neck-and-neck with the top AA teams in the state.

Fueling their domination is the senior Bemidji State-bound duo of Talya Hendrickson and Kate Johnson. Hendrickson is three goals shy of 100 for her five-year career and, with 274 total points, has a chance to get to 300 before she dons the cap and gown this spring.

Johnson, who played for East Grand Forks in eighth and ninth grade, is just three points from 250 in her prep career. And with the way Warroad lights up the scoreboard, Kate has an outside shot of getting to 150 high school goals.

Where Eagles soar

Apple Valley’s Moran sisters, senior Marie and sophomore Makayla, have much to play for as they will lead the #15 ranked Eagles into the section playoffs.

Additionally, the explosive duo are both inching toward huge individual benchmarks in their prolific careers. Marie, headed next year to play at St. Cloud State, seems a cinch to reach 150 career points before the end of the regular season.

Makayla, in her fourth year of varsity hockey, has averaged over two points per game for her career, and has a good shot at her 100th assist and 200th point before the end of this season. With her junior and senior seasons still ahead, there are still more chapters to be written on her storied prep career.

Senior Leaders

Mankato East senior forward McKenzie Keller is on pace to reach her 100th goal scored as a Cougar, with an outside shot of reaching 200 points for her career. Keller has led the Cougars in scoring the past three seasons.

GP 122 G 88A 77Pts. 165

Maple Grove senior Stella Retrum is knocking on the door to 150 career points, and it may well happen this week. The Penn State commit leads the 8th ranked Crimson in scoring as they try for a return trip to the Class AA state tournament.

White Hot White Hawks

A trio of Mound-Westonka/SWC players are on the cusp of statistical elitism. Starting with the aforementioned Sydney Leonard, who is currently 21 points from 200 for her career.

GP 117 G 100A 79Pts. 179

Leonard’s five-year varsity teammate Gretta Pioske is eight points away from 150 in her outstanding seasons with the White Hawks.

GP 117 G 76A 66Pts. 142

White Hawks’ junior forward Camryn Hargreaves is nearing triple digits in points in her fourth season on varsity.

GP 87 G 39A 50Pts. 89

A Gopher, a Cardinal and more wildlife

Future Golden Gopher Lauren O’Hara of Centennial/SLP is just three points away from 150 in her stellar five-year varsity career.

GP 118 G 71A 76Pts. 147

Simley senior Ella Tuccitto is fast approaching 150 career points in her five-year career with the Spartans, who are currently ranked #3 in Class A.

Minneapolis senior forward and St. Mary’s commit Celia Midtbo is nearing 100 goals scored in her high school career. Midtbo had 45 goals last season as a junior and could get to the 150 point threshold before the season wraps up.

With a strong finish to the season, Blake senior Sam Broz could reach 150 career points. Like her teammate Suzy Higuchi, Broz is in her sixth year of varsity hockey.

GP 127 G 61A 68Pts. 129

Stella Retrum’s Maple Grove teammate Bella Shipley is also steps away from the 100-point mountaintop. The junior forward should arrive at the summit very soon.
